Digitisation of Gartnavel Royal Hospital records, Glasgow

In 2014, the University of Glasgow was awarded funding from the Wellcome Trust to digitise the records of Gartnavel Royal Hospital. The project aims to digitise thousands of documents including photographs, in-house staff publications, administrative papers, financial documents and patient records. Staff and patient records from 1914 onwards will not be digitised due to data sensitivity issues. The Digitisation Centre is pleased to announce that the first phase of the project has been completed and a rich sample from the Gartnavel collection is now available to view via the Wellcome Trust’s website. You can browse the material now available by clicking here.

There are just under two years left to go on the project, with digitised content regularly being uploaded to the website. The final upload is expected to take place in early 2017 so do check back to see how the project is progressing. The latest updates can be found on our Twitter account @UniOfGlasgowDC and via the University Library blog, under the University of Glasgow Digitisation Centre tag. Please share this information with anyone that may be interested in the project’s development.

The original records are still under the care of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archive and any enquiries relating to the content of the material should be direction to Alistair Tough, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archivist. If you have any queries about the digitisation aspect to this project, then please do get in touch.
